The latest few from Pat, missed in my absence:

Excellent News

Michael Reiss resigns. Teaching creationism in Science lessons, is he fucking mental? Oh no, he’s an ordained priest – a job, it seems to me, which is wholly incompatible with being Director of Education at the National Academy of Science. Good riddance to the fucktard.

Krauss and Dawkins on Science and Faith

Krauss: You have cogently argued in The God Delusion that religion is bad science. I would argue, however, that this is particularly inappropriate, and in fact falls into the same trap fallen into by those who push Intelligent Design in science classrooms, as well as those who fund Templeton Foundation grants that attempt to foster scientific evidence for God. I have framed this issue in language that hearkens back to Carl Sagan, who said that absence of evidence is not the same as evidence of absence. Would a world without God necessarily look any different than the world we live in? Most scientists would say no, and thus claim we do not need the God Hypothesis to explain anything about nature. On the other hand one might also ask: Would a world with a God necessarily look any different than the world we live in? People of faith would argue no, and in so doing feel vindicated in their faith. The problem is that both groups are correct, and nothing either can say is likely to influence the other.

Dawkins: I have several times said that a universe with a God would be a very different kind of universe from one without. You have translated this into operational terms, and consequently arrived at the legitimate question of whether the two kinds of universe would look different. Not be different (my question) but look different (your question, where ‘look different’ can presumably mean any difference, detectable in any way by any of our sense organs or scientific instruments). I agree that yours is an important question, and I agree with you that it might be surprisingly hard to detect, by observation or experiment, whether we live in a god-free universe or a god-endowed one. Nevertheless, I still maintain that there is a cogent sense in which a scientist can discuss the question. There still is a sense in which we can have an interesting and illuminating scientific discussion about whether X is the case, even if we can’t demonstrate it one way or the other by observation or experiment. How can I argue this and still claim to be doing science?

Defragging the Ten Commandments

“Nine Commandments, Seven Commandment Thirteen? Ten! It’s a marketing device!”

“Thy shall keep thy religion to thyself”

Dad, I’m an Atheist

My dad ended telling me that he did not support my views and he will not respect them. I told him that I wasn’t trying to change anyone else’s views. I just want to make mine known. I also said that I don’t expect him to support or respect my views and that I do expect him to try and show me I’m wrong, with which he interrupted, “No. It is not my job to show you you are wrong, and you are. That is the Lord. The Holy Spirit.” He contradicts himself all the time. I then tried to end the conversation by saying that all I needed him to do was love me. He said he does. Then he said, “Nothing you do will make me love you less, nothing you do will make me love you more.” For those of you who don’t know, God says that in the Bible. But he wasn’t quoting it. He actually said it for himself. That seemed a little strange to me.

Go Here and read the rest, heartbreakingly real.

Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska and GOP VP Nominee

Pro-life* (i.e. Anti-woman), Anti-Gay rights (i.e. Anti-human rights), Pro-drilling, Creationist whackjob, Sarah Palin** has been picked by John McCain (he of the temper) to be his VP running mate on the GOP 2008 ticket. Please Please Please let Obama win – this is the kind of moron that sets the development of the human race back 200 years.

*Why are GOP-ers so concerned for the rights of the unborn, then once you’re born – you’re on your own? Pre-natal, great. Pre-school, fuck you!

**No relation to Michael, I imagine – far too humourless by the looks of it.

Mission

To create an outlet for prominent young freethought leaders to express their views and get them heard. Congratulations on your acceptance to the International School of Highly Emotive Knee-Jerk Reactionary Hissy Fits and welcome to your first seminar, Criticizing Atheism 101! Today we will be talking about the most successful, tried-and-occasionally-true techniques for criticizing the “New Atheism” as deployed by such renowned reactionary hissy fit-throwers as David Berlinski, Scott Hahn, Alistair McGrath, and others! All of the important information for this course has been compiled below into a list of seven key points, which can easily be adapted for any critic of atheism to use in his or her particular tempter tantrum…

MCB Backtracks on Progressive Marriage Contract

Ed Husain in today’s Guardian.

When I met Amina she was still in love with this man but her father insisted she marry her cousin from Pakistan, who happened, rather conveniently, to be visiting England. Her father also had a heart condition and used his illness to emotionally blackmail her. Eventually Amina gave way. She sacrificed love to south Asian culture and married Mr Pakistan.

White, liberal eyes reading this article will be astounded to know these things happen in Britain. I am sorry, but they do. And it gets worse.

Amina was repeatedly raped by Mr Pakistan, but her mother told her that a Muslim man has such rights over his wife, and in Islam there is no such thing as marital rape.

This is “regrettable” apparently.

“Brain-washed Mother” starves Child to Death

The one-year old, wouldn’t say amen, after being fed apparently.

After denying Javon Thompson food and water for two days because he wouldn’t say “Amen” after meals, the one-year-old’s caretakers waited for a divine sign that their message had been heard: a resurrection.

For more than a week, police say in charging documents describing the scene, the child’s lifeless body lay in the back room of an apartment. Queen Antoinette, the 40-year-old leader of a group that called itself 1 Mind Ministries, brought in her followers and told them to pray. God, she said, would raise Javon from the dead.

Instead, Javon’s body began to decompose.

Utter & complete inhumane fucking Bastards. I hope you die the most painful of deaths, slowly and without mercy – you’re scum.

“My daughter was very religious. She was into the Bible – obsessed with it,” Khadan-Newton said. “They (were) going to show her the right way. She got sucked into it.”

Well, why the holy fuck, didn’t you – her bloody Mother – do something about it? Another waste of 46 chromosomes.

Turkish Creationist challenges Dawkins to Evolution Debate

From today’s Guardian, here:

Richard Dawkins is used to being provoked by loony American evangelical creationists. But his latest challenge comes from a strange Turkish figure called Harun Yahya whose lavishly produced (and frankly preposterous) four-volume tome The Atlas of Creation caused a stir last year when it was sent to thousands of academics across Europe.

Yahya (real name Adnan Oktar) has invited Dawkins to debate Darwin’s theory of evolution with him publicly. Yahya believes the theory “has lately suffered a global collapse”.

Yahya says…

Let Dawkins ask the same questions to us, and let us give our answers. Let us supply our evidence, and let him bring his – if he has any. Then let the public decide who is right. We want the public to know on a larger scale how Darwinism is a false theory and how it is the greatest deception of the world’s history. We are confident that the days are soon to come when people will laugh, asking themselves “How could we ever believe this theory?”

Renown self-publicist and Film faker is out of luck, Dawkins has consistently said he won’t take part in these debates as it lends the oxygen of publicity and an audience to those whose ideas are so ludicrous, it’s hardly worth having the argument at all. Dawkins himself explains here how the “stumped” film came about. I very much doubt whether he’d want to give this guy any more credence. Which is a shame in a way, as I love nothing more than seeing Creationists get bitch-slapped.

Actually that reminds me of something…

Bill Donohue: Fuckwit

After the Pharyngula debacle (more here) involving Catholic League President, all-round war mongering, fuck the poor, uber-conservative Bill Donohue – it seems Billy Boy now has someone else in his sights.

The latest missive from Chez Medieval is to demand that the Democratic Party should revoke Press credentials from “offensive” bloggers.  The wonderfully named Bitch PhD. says that, even as a very “crappy” Catholic she finds these items offensive.  Dependably idiotic Bill, has leapt straight on the bandwagon (going in the wrong direction) and criticised the blogger for daring to say that these “toys” are more offensive than the “desecration” of the Eucharist by PZ Myers – and that she has a picture of a child on her blog flipping someone the bird – a somewhat naughty, but nonetheless hilarious image, I might add.  Of course, there is still some ire left for the homosexuals as well.  Towleroad describes itself as ‘A Site with Homosexual Tendencies.’ Accordingly, it shows men in jock straps and underwear.  Whoppee fucking shit. First amendment Bill, first amendment.

Bill, you complete arse, I ‘ve said it before and I’ll say it again – and I’ll keep saying it – in a civil society, no one has the right to complain about being offended. Being offended, offendable and offensive is one of the things that sets us free. Liberty, if it means anything, is the right to tell people what they don’t want to hear. Ah, now, I see the problem – you don’t like that do you Billy? Freedom is a VERY. BAD. THING. Free people might just stop believing in the biggest bullshit tale ever sold to mankind – Religion. And we wouldn’t want that would we. Must advance the cause, eh Billy? Here’s a final thought Billy: Why don’t you fuck off and take your medieval misogynist racist homophobic sky-fairy tales with you. Honestly, do us a favour and disappear up your own arse.

Astonishing…

Apparently, girls in Scotland WILL NOT be given contraception information when they are vaccinated against HPV for Cervical Cancer. WHAT. THE. FUCK? Why are we even discussing this with these people. Apparently the Church had raised objections to the vaccination on the grounds that it could increase promiscuity (yeah, ‘cos I’d rather any daughter of mine had freakin’ cancer than more than one sexual partner) but a deal has been struck to allow the vaccinations to go ahead as long as they ARE NOT given the contraception advice. Fucking. Ridiculous. We should have just told them to go and boil their stupid, backwards evil heads.

CNN Morons

Did this question actually need asking? Absolute fucking morons.

Islamic Insanity

From Gulf News

Saudi Man kills daughter for converting to Christianity.

A Saudi man working with the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice recently killed his daughter for converting to Christianity.

According to sources close to the victim, the religious police member had cut the tongue of the girl and burned her to death following a heated debate on religion.

According to the article, the girl had written a post on a group blog saying how her family had become suspicious of her following a discussion on religion.

According to the Saudi Al Ukhdoud news website, the victim wrote an article on the blog of which she was a member under the nickname “Rania” a few days before her murder.

She wrote that her life became an ordeal after her family members grew suspicious about her after a religious discussion with them.

She said that her brother found some Christian articles written by her as well as a cross sign on her computer screen. Since then he started to insult her and blamed the internet for pushing her to change her religion.

The “Free Copts” website published a message which it received from a friend of the victim, revealing that the killer is in police custody and that he is being investigated for an honour related crime.

Saudi religious scholars have frequently warned against the dangers of Christian internet websites and satellite TV channels which attract Muslim youngsters to change their religion.

They decreed that watching these channels or browsing these websites which call for conversion to Christianity by various means is against the teachings of Islam.

People like this have no understanding of the sanctity of life or the freedom of conscience. What an utter and complete bastard.
